And that was a really depressing feeling, because of all the time and money put into this, not to mention the coolness of playing a 5-string when singing. I have tried the Veerman mystery, Enigma, and archies and they are all some of the best bridges ive played with, for tone, clarity, projection, and note separation. Thats way too technical engineering like for me, but it seemed like a good idea, and Im a sucker for new, innovative bridges. All parts are original apart of this bridge. This translates into a lot of volume if you really dig in, should you ever need to peel the paint off your walls. It also is an outstanding bridge. Just when I thought the Huber couldn't be improved, the Davis bridge gave it just a slight increase of volume & an ever so slight longer sustain. I lowered my head tension from G#+ to G#, which improved the bass response and retained treble clarity. Try them for yourself and hear the difference. I just tried a new Douglas Fir Spillway Dam 5/8 std. Mahogany of course by nature wants to sound somewhat mellow. This lack of sagging is particularly nice as it keeps my 3rd string in more stable pitch. Tim's "Old Flooring" bridge really brought a beautiful timbre in my banjo. After quite a lot debate I decided on a Kat Eyz design with frame of McCormick Spice with a pegged top of Rosewood, standard spacing with a 5/8 height. I did have to file the slot a bit for several of the strings, but that was easy. Price: Barts bridges start at $15 and escalate in price depending on the myriad options available for customization. Solid, crisp tones all the way up and down the neck. I play a Reiter Special (a great instrument), but I always thought the stock 5/8" bridge led to the action being just a little high. I had built the banjo meaning to use a 3/4" bridge, but when I got it together the action was too low for my liking. The simple fact is that bridges will sound good/bad on any banjo. I have a Wildwood Paragon, which is a really loud (and absolutely wonderful!) Anyway, for 75 bucks for the 3 bridges (shipping was dirt cheap) I'd say I got way more than a bargoon. I like the thickness (same as the Snuffy) and the slight rearward angle that it sits onalso like the Snuffy bridge. Need less to say I am hooked! It warms the treble so much that it gets just a little clang-y, losing some of the Scruggsy, bell-like sweetness I like to hear in a Gibson banjo. I wasnt even considering that bridgeI just assumed it was only good on an archtop. He then slid the Birch in place, and again a huge difference over the bridge I had in it. I ordered the spice bridge with the purple heart pegged top- medium weight as he suggested. It is slightly less weight then virgin maple, and I think this improves the resonance of the bridge.Finally, the treble is very sweet. The Stelling Old Wood(Birch) compensated bridge turned outto be the perfect match for my OME Juggernaut banjo ; its THEbridge for banjos w/ lots of "ring". 7. Although it was a close race, the winner was his Mystery/Ebony bridge. My RB-3 rings with more sustain, it's crisp and clear with lots of treble but no loss of bass. She was 15 at the time. Every note on the fingerboard is full and dynamic.no dead or weak spots. And Gary shipped it lightning fast! I have several bridges which didn't work for my Ome Jubilee, but this plain top, heavy weight bridge has brought warmth with clarity to my banjo. Great craftsmanship, and working with Don is great. On the Goldtone in particular, it now rings forever. It did require a little angling to get the intonation just right, but way less angling than I had been using with an uncompensated bridge.
